Our mission statement is "Knowing Christ, Growing in God's love, and Serving as the Holy Spirit Leads".  This statement is supported by our core values: Scripture, the Lordship of Christ, Godly relationship, Christian education, outreach, and reformed heritiage.

Charles Town Presbyterian Church adopted six core values in late summer of 2005. We think they embody our church and our congregation. Core values speak to what is most important in the church’s life and when properly selected, they should:

  • communicate what is distinctive about our church
  • motivate and energize people to action
  • lead the church into the future
  • influence every decision, action or behavior
  • communicate what really matters – what is important

CTPC Core Values
In response to God’s grace, we are committed to:
Scripture - Discovering God’s truth through biblically centered preaching and teaching
Godly Relationships - Devoting ourselves to nurture one another in our homes, in our church family and in our community
Outreach - Serving others by using our gifts and resources to share the Good News of Christ
Christian Education - Deepening our understanding of Jesus Christ through life-long learning and discipleship
Lordship of Christ - Honoring Jesus Christ as Lord through worship, prayer and sacrifice
Reformed Heritage - Embracing our identity and history as Presbyterians

Each core value is a constant, passionate, biblical belief that drives our church’s ministry. They also drive our Mission Statement and Vision. The combination of three short, concise statements provide insight into our ministry, beliefs and where we are headed as a congregation.

On February 17, 1787, the founder of Charles Town, Charles Washington, executed a deed granting a lot to the Board of Trustees of the Charles Town Presbyterian Church. Charles Washington was paid 20 pounds for the lot, which was located in the western part of Charles Town.

The early church experienced periods of growth and decline. In 1851 the congregation moved to the current location on East Washington Street. The present sanctuary was built and soon thereafter the manse was built next door for the Pastor and his family.

As the church continued to experience growth, a chapel was added to the rear of the sanctuary for Christian Education and it was soon reporting a membership in excess of 300. During the 1930's another addition of an educational wing took place, and the chapel became a Fellowship Hall. In the 1960's a final building program was undertaken, completing the present facility.

The church also expanded its presence in the county, offering services in Harpers Ferry; organizing a chapel in Halltown, which eventually developed into a separate congregation; and assuming responsibility for the Beulah Chapel near Rippon.
